What We Do

Physical rehabilitation is the process of helping an individual achieve the highest level of function, independence, and quality of life possible.

Rehabilitation does not always mean to undo or reverse damage caused by disease or trauma but rather to restore and assist the individual to optimal health, functioning and well-being

What Makes Us Unique

Excellence and evidence-based services to create a space where patients are felt cared for, to reach their optimal recovery and quality of life.

Treatment, EDUCATION AND Rehab Plan

Rehabilitation and education always forms part of your treatment at Anna Swanepoel Physiotherapists. Your rehabilitation plan will depend on your needs and goals – this can range from:

• Education with regards to your condition, how the brain and pain work together, explaining bodymechanics and much more – the better you understand your condition, the better you can manage it yourself!
• Education about pain and that pain is not always your enemy – to understand the “I am sore but I am safe” attitude to activities and exercises.

• Knowledge about pacing strategies, your flare-up plan, progression of your exercises.
• Individualized home exercise program with follow-up session with your physio for progression.
• You may be referred to Bio-Pilates if more individualised attention is needed or Pilates group classes. This is optional to our patients.
• To a biokineticist for final phase of rehabilitation.

DIFFERENT REHABILITATION OPTIONS WITH ANNA PHYSIOS:

Assessment

Each assessment will differ depending on your specific problem and specific goals, but you will always begin your journey with us with a thorough assessment. This is a key to a successful treatment outcome. There are two sections to the assessment process. A subjective assessment about the history of onset, nature, behaviour of symptoms and psycho-social factors. An objective assessment looking at the joint gliding and integrity, muscle stabilization, strength and flexibility, neural integrity, and dynamics as well as biomechanical assessment of movement patterns. After the assessment a diagnosis is made, your will be referred and assigned to one of our Pilates and Rehab team members who will compile and explain your treatment plan.

Posture Rehabilitation

Posture rehabilitation forms the foundation of any rehabilitation program. Good postural alignment is about the balance around your spine. It is your deeper core stabilizing muscles that is key to achieving this. Think about “lengthening” of your spine, rather than a “upright rigid” spine because movement is still important within this “good postural alignment”! Our postural muscles are endurance based muscles, and therefore your need to have an 24/7 awareness throughout the day! This is the key principles for a strong CORE structure and optimal force generation. Pilates is one of the best exercise regimes for achieving this!

Pre-habilitation Program

Pre-habilitation, injury prevention programs, is one of the most effective ways of preventing injuries, saving money in the long run and achieve top sport performance. Bad postural habits and repetitive sporting actions lead to muscle dominance which results in shearing forces on the body and predicts injuries. Pre-habilitation is applicable to everyone, from office workers, housewives, sport persons and school kids. Pilates is one of the best exercise regimes for achieving this!

Rehabilitation after a long sick bed

Muscle atrophy is a normal phenomenon after a few days in bed. Muscle strength is important for balance, protecting our joints and for function. The aim of rehabilitation after a long sick bed will include returning a patient to pre-illness cardiovascular fitness, mobility your range of motion, strength levels, restore balance and work for independence. This can be done by following a graded home exercise program. Dependant on your need, it might be necessary to refer you further for either Bio-pilates, Pilates group classes or to a Biokineticist.

Neurological rehabilitation

Neurological conditions greatly affect function, activities and participation. Each patients’ specific goals and dreams are our aim focus when creating a rehabilitation program to restore the patients ability to function independently within his optimal potential. Part of the system is also to collaborate with the immediate family whose life’s have also being affected. Different approaches are used to give you the best opportunity for improvement.

Pre- and post-natal rehabilitation

During and after giving birth, the deep core muscles including the pelvic floor (inner cylinder) lose some of its integrity. These muscles help to control intra-abdominal pressure, give stability to the low back and pelvis and need to be strengthened in a progressive way while incorporating functional movement patterns. Pilates forms an ideal way for achieving this goal.

Pilates rehabilitation

Pilates is an exercise method that engages the body mentally and physically. The benefits include strengthening of the core muscles, developing proper postural alignment, increased flexibility and balance, as well as improved oxygenation through focused breathing techniques. A balanced Pilates program dramatically transforms the way your body looks, feels and performs. It builds strength without excess bulk, it teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. The greatest benefit does not only lie in performing these exercises, but in the application of these new patterns in your everyday life.

Work rehabilitation

The main focus of Workability Network practices, is to restore function of the injured worker to safely return to work as soon as possible. This benefits both the client and employer. As an accredited Network practice for Workability, we caters for the full rehabilitation process by means of work conditioning (strengthening) and work hardening (work simulation) done by the occupation therapists at the practice. We communicate with all stake holders for the best outcome for everyone. Communication with the employer is to educate and inform them about the graded return to work protocol to get the injured worker safely back to his own occupation.

Rehabilitation does not always mean to undo or reverse damage caused by disease or trauma but rather to restore and assist the individual to optimal health, functioning and well-being.
