Specific treatment and breathing exercises to target pathology and improve blood oxygenation.

Respiratory physiotherapy or chest physiotherapy is a specialty area of physiotherapy that helps people with lung disease to maximise and maintain their lung function and exercise tolerance.

The primary purpose of respiratory physiotherapy is:

• To facilitate removal of airway/sinus secretions.
• To optimize lung compliance and prevent it from collapsing.
• To decrease the work of breathing.
• To optimize the ventilation-perfusion ratio – oxygenation.

We begin our Chest physiotherapy programme with a thorough assessment with regards to your medical history, ventilation, breathing pattern and secretions. This is a key to a successful treatment outcome. After the assessment a diagnosis is made, the different treatment options are explained, and a treatment plan is discussed with the patient.

Treatment Options
How is chest physiotherapy performed?

Chest Physical Therapy is an airway clearance technique to drain the lungs from secretions, and may include nebulisation, postural drainage positioning, percussion (clapping), vibration, deep breathing exercises, huffing / coughing and even suction if indicated.

We have a dedicated Covid-19 treatment and recovery program. The treatment options will vary depending where you are on your journey through Covid-19. This might include chest physiotherapy through to empowerment, education and rehabilitation. We aim to return you to optimal function and as well have the confidence to manage your condition independently.

Respiratory Physiotherapy can be very beneficial in the rehabilitation and recovery of patients with COVID-19.

During your therapy program your physiotherapist will give you various lung and breathing exercises to do on a daily basis which will help speed up your recovery process.
The benefit of breathing exercises does not stop with  your lungs….. it is for your total overall wellbeing…..

  • Improves oxygenation throughout the whole body.
  • Helps restore diaphragm function and increases lung capacity.
  • Deep breathing exercises help to decrease feelings of anxiety and stress {turn “fight and flight” (unhealthy long term) response into “rest and digest” (healthy)}, which will help with feelings of fatigue and depression.
  • It boosts the immune system.
  • Helps to lower your heart rate.
  • Helps to lower your blood pressure.
  • Improves diabetic symptoms.
  • Helps to manage chronic pain.
  • Sleep quality may also improve with these breathing exercises.
